Self-Confidence and Its Relationship with Freestyle Swimming Performance among First-Year Students at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, Al-Mustansiriyah University

This study aims to investigate the level of self-confidence among first-year students at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at Al-Mustansiriyah University and to examine its relationship with their performance in the 25-meter freestyle swimming. The researcher employed the descriptive method using the correlational approach. The sample consisted of 30 randomly selected students.
The Robyn Vealey Sport Confidence Inventory (Arabic version by Mohammed Hassan Allawi, 1995) was used, which includes 13 items with a maximum score of 117. In addition, a 25-meter freestyle swimming performance test was administered.
The results revealed that students had a high level of self-confidence (mean = 88.13, SD = 8.99), and showed relatively consistent performance in swimming (mean = 22.65 seconds, SD = 0.98). Pearson's correlation analysis indicated a strong and statistically significant inverse relationship between self-confidence and swimming time (r = -0.657, p < 0.001), suggesting that higher levels of self-confidence contribute to better (faster) performance.
Based on these findings, the researcher recommends integrating psychological support programs into sports training curricula, including motivational and counseling sessions, and encouraging further research on the relationship between psychological factors and physical performance across various sports and age groups.
