Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of physical training during fasting on selected blood components, namely red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), and plasma volume, among elite freestyle wrestlers. The experimental method with a pre- and post-test design was employed on a sample of ten elite wrestlers who performed a standardized training session during the month of Ramadan. Blood samples were collected before and after the training session. The results revealed a statistically significant increase in red blood cell count, indicating enhanced bone marrow stimulation and improved oxygen-carrying capacity as adaptive physiological responses to exercise during fasting. Conversely, a non-significant decrease in white blood cell count was observed, suggesting that short-term fasting combined with exercise did not adversely affect immune function in elite athletes. Additionally, a significant reduction in plasma volume was recorded, which can be attributed to fluid restriction and increased sweat loss during fasting hours. The study concludes that properly regulated physical training during fasting does not negatively impact key blood variables and may promote positive physiological adaptations in elite wrestlers. These findings highlight the importance of scientifically planned training loads and appropriate scheduling during Ramadan to maintain athlete health and performance.
