Abstract

The interest in sport psychological counseling has become one of the requirements and necessities needed in the process of preparing the player to help him overcome the psychological problems he faces. It also helps in developing athletes by providing them with skills such as meditation, relaxation, communication, and goal setting through specialized counselors in this field. The study aims to reveal the relationship between positive thinking and free throw performance among first stage students at Diyala University, College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences. To achieve the study objectives, the researcher used the descriptive method with correlational relationships. The research community consisted of first-year students for the year 2023, totaling 14 students. The research sample consisted of 10 students who were selected intentionally. The study tools included the use of the positive thinking scale, and the scientific foundations of the scale were verified using statistical methods. The study found a positive correlational relationship between the research variables in positive thinking and the level of performance in free throw shooting in basketball, in a negative direction. The study recommended developing free throw shooting skills, positive thinking, and attitudes among students in university stages, and conducting studies on this variable in other sports events.
