The researcher addressed the importance of rehabilitative resistance exercises in strengthening the lower back muscles, which often suffer from weakness, especially when combined with medical devices such as the TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) device. TENS contributes to pain reduction, muscle relaxation, a feeling of comfort, and improved blood circulation.
The problem of the study focused on the recurring incidence of low back pain (specifically in the lumbar region) among Olympic weightlifters, as this is one of the most common issues affecting their performance. The lumbar area bears the greatest load due to the intense weights lifted, often resulting in increased pain in this region.
The significance of this study lies in utilizing resistance exercises along with the TENS device to treat or alleviate low back pain, strengthen lumbar muscles, and improve spinal flexibility and range of motion in weightlifters. The aim of the research was to investigate the effect of these combined interventions on improving lower back muscle strength, range of motion, and rehabilitation of low back pain in Olympic weightlifters.
The researcher adopted the experimental method using a single-group pre-test/post-test design, as it was suitable for the nature and objectives of the study. The research sample included six Olympic weightlifters from the Badrah Specialized Weightlifting Club who were suffering from low back pain. The participants were intentionally selected based on scientific criteria, a questionnaire, specialist consultation, and a medical examination.
The intervention was applied over 8 weeks, with 3 training sessions per week, using resistance exercises accompanied by TENS therapy. After the completion of the experimental period, post-tests were conducted and the data was statistically analyzed using the SPSS software package.
The study reached several conclusions, the most important of which was:
The use of resistance exercises had a positive effect in reducing low back pain and improving muscle strength and flexibility among the injured weightlifters.
The researcher recommended generalizing the therapeutic exercises used in the study to all weightlifting clubs in Wasit province, to be used by lifters as a preventive measure against lumbar spine injuries
