The Effect of High-Specific Anaerobic Training on Some Special Physical Abilities and Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) in Handball Players

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of high-specific anaerobic training on developing selected special physical abilities and reducing delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) among handball players. The research problem emerged from the observed decline in performance-related physical abilities, particularly performance endurance and repeated sprint ability, in addition to the increased severity of delayed onset muscle soreness following intensive training and competition. The researcher employed an experimental method using a pre-test and post-test design with equivalent groups. The sample consisted of (16) handball players randomly assigned into two equal groups (8 players each). The experimental group followed a high-specific anaerobic training program, whereas the control group continued with the regular training program. The intervention lasted for eight weeks with three training sessions per week. The findings revealed statistically significant improvements in performance endurance and repeated sprint ability, along with a significant reduction in DOMS in favor of the experimental group. It was concluded that high-specific anaerobic training is an effective training approach for enhancing special physical abilities and reducing delayed onset muscle soreness in handball players.
